E-WASTE RECYCLING AT TEKSERVE
It’s good for the environment and the economy, and it’s also a way to reduce clutter in your cramped NYC apartment — and besides, it’s been required by law since January 1. Chelsea’s Tekserve teams up with the Lower East Side Ecology Center to make e-waste recycling easy, at this July 18 drop-off event. Bring your tablets, laptop and desktop computers, monitors, printers, scanners, fax machines, modems, keyboards, mice, cables, cords, chargers, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, video games, cell phones and more (but not appliances, such as microwaves, air conditioners and smoke detectors).
All of the equipment you leave in their hands is transported to LEEC’s e-waste warehouse in Brooklyn, where it’s either refurbished and sold to support their work or returned to electronic equipment manufacturers. By participating, you’ll help sustain green jobs in NYC and reduce the truck miles necessary to collect electronic equipment for proper recycling.
Sat., July 18, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. in front of Tekserve (119 W. 23rd St. btw. Sixth & Seventh Aves.). For more info on acceptable equipment and the recycling process it goes through, visit lesecologycenter.org.
SAIL ON THE SLOOP CLEARWATER
Pete Seeger sailed the Hudson, and you can too — but unlike the late, great activist singer/songwriter, you won’t be required to replicate the sloops that made their way along the West Side waterfront in the 18th and 19th centuries. What you will get to do is sail aboard the very ship constructed by Seeger and friends, then launched into the Hudson in 1969 to raise awareness about the once-pristine river’s toxic soup of sewage, chemicals and oil pollution. Years later, the 106-foot long Clearwater is still sailing, long ago recognized as America’s Environmental Flagship. Hear about the Hudson’s past glories and present challenges, as you and members of the Chelsea Waterside Park Association sail down the Hudson River and view the West Side waterfront from a different perspective.
Tues., July 21, 6–9 p.m. The group sails from Pier 60 (20th St. & Hudson River). Boarding time is 5:30 p.m. at Pier 60 Sloop leaves promptly at 6:00 p.m. $55 fee includes a meat or vegetarian box supper. For reservations (only 50 can sail), call Pamela at 212-255-8443.
