Chinatown’s Lunar New Year parade returns Sun., Feb. 22.

BY VICTORIA GRANTHAM   |  To survive the barrage of snowy, sleety winter weather and the inevitable indoor confinement that comes with it, we’re going to have to focus on our love for one another. Thankfully, there’s ample opportunity for that given Valentine’s Day. Options for celebrating cupid’s holiday this year include Valentine’s Day parties at Broad Street Ballroom in the Financial District and at Citibabes in Soho and a card making event at the Battery Park City Library.

For something totally unexpected there’s the 30th Annual Half Moon New York Sword Ale. Apparently this is a winter celebration centered around sword dancing that’s taking place at locations across the city. I’m not quite sure what a sword ale has to do with professing love, but anyway, there it is. For a cushioned come down after all the fun, there’s a post-V-Day Baby Loves Disco ball at Le Poisson Rouge.

In addition to hearts and hugs, it’s also time to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Relevant events range from Chinese New Year craft making at the B.P.C. Library, to the Asian American Festival at the Children’s Museum of the Arts. On Sun. Feb. 22, the 16th Annual Lunar New Year Parade will run through Chinatown and Little Italy.

Options for live shows for young kids continue this season with “Rapunzarellawhite,” a musical princess fairy tale mash up and Jazz for Kids at the Jazz Standard. Penny Jones & Co. is performing their sweet puppet show at Westbeth. The latest is “Three Little Pigs” and “Boswell, the Polar Bear.” Also, the Film Forum Jr. Sunday matinee series continues with “An American in Paris” and “Go West.” Additionally, there’s a Sweet Love and Lullabies tour at Rockwood Music Hall.

For teens there’s a teen collective night at the Abrons Arts Center on Grand St., which is a free evening of “videoke.” There’s also teen volunteer time at the library.

For the particularly hearty among us, there are still some outdoor activity options, believe it or not. “Frozen” fans can strap on some skates and head to the Seaport ice rink to glide alongside Elsa on Feb. 18. Winter afterschool sports and games continues on the B.P.C. ballfields.

Cuddle up and stay warm! If you know of something coming up that should be included in these listings, drop me a suggestion in the comments below.
