After months of rumors and anxious hope, the developers of the residential conversion of 1 Wall St. has finally inked a deal landing Whole Foods as the anchor tenant for its ground floor retail space.
The 44,000-square-foot, three-story gourmet grocery store — set to open in 2018 — is seen by locals as a crowning jewel for the neighborhood in its change from a the staid, commercial “Financial District” to the tony, residential “Fidi.”
“It confirms the arrival of our neighborhood as a true residential neighborhood and it will be transformative,” said realtor Luis Vazquez, founder of the Fidi Fan Page. “The visual of a huge Whole Foods at the historic corner of Wall Street and Broadway will also be striking.”
And as Downtown Express noted when the rumors of the high-end grocer’s move to Fidi first surfaced, the arrival of a Whole Foods may actually lower some locals’ grocery bills.
