Sandy hits Downtown as residents are evacuated

With Hurricane Sandy headed for New York yesterday, the city and state ordered much of Lower Manhattan’s population to evacuate, and closed the subways and buses. We posted the evacuation zone map and a hurricane article. Gov. Andrew Cuomo toured the World Trade Center this morning and WCBS is reporting that Con Edison is considering cutting off power in parts of Lower Manhattan as a precautionary measure to protect its equipment. Check our Twitter, Facebook and web pages for more updates.

Send us your Lower Manhattan photos and evacuation stories to reynolds_aline@yahoo.com. Since the Downtown Express office is in the evacuation zone, this week we are publishing our hard copy on Thursday.

Coincidentally, the storm coincides with the return of Josh Rogers as editor of Downtown Express.  Rogers, who left the paper in 2010, is now working with Aline Reynolds, who remains the associate editor.

You can’t say we didn’t warn you. Read our Page 1 article from 2006 explaining the city’s decision to change its hurricane plan by evacuating more Lower Manhattan residents before hurricanes.
