Local children reveled in the first snow day of 2014, as around six inches fell in Manhattan and schools were closed by new Department of Education Chancellor Carmen Fariña just a day after she took office.
In Tribeca, 8-year-old Pria Gadkary (pictured above) celebrated the day off — alongside her parents and other kids from the block (below) — by playing in snow that piled up just outside her home, near the corner of Reade and Hudson Sts.
And over at Hudson and Harrison Sts. (pictured below), as well as other locations, it was apparent that while the city’s Department of Transportation didn’t clear out many of its myriad Citi Bike racks in advance of the storm, virtually all of the area bikes remained unused due to the treacherous riding conditions. The bikes generally didn’t seem to impede snow plow progress, although plowing on side streets came relatively slowly compared to the main roadways.
Meanwhile, around the corner at Duane and Hudson Sts., workers hired by local businesses (pictured below) pulled out all the stops, including a heavy-duty snow blower, to clear sidewalks and intersections.
In its effort to clear the streets, the city has sent forth nearly 2,500 plows from various agencies, according to the Department of Sanitation. Updates on local plowing progress can be found on the city’s PlowNYC map.
