Hearings begin this week in Washington D.C on a proposed bill to establish federal funding for the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum. The legislation would grant the memorial and museum $20 million in annual funding, which amounts to roughly one third of its operating budget.
The federal government previously pitched in $250 million to help construct the memorial and museum.
A Senate committee headed by Sen. Daniel K. Inouye from Hawaii will hold the first hearing on the proposed legislation. The bill also contains a provision that would allow the federal government to takeover the memorial and museum in the future.
