On Saturday, just hours after a funeral with full police honors was held for slain auxiliary police officer Nicholas Pekearo on W. 14th St., a rally and march against police tactics started unfolding only blocks away in Union Square. The day before, it had been announced that indictments had been prepared in the Sean Bell case. Gathering at Union Square, more than 100 protesters marched down Broadway to near City Hall, chanting, “Fifty shots, let’s kill the cops” and “Arrest Ray Kelly.” They counted from 1 to 50 — the number of shots police fired at Bell and two of his friends outside a Queens strip club on Nov. 25, killing Bell; the police had mistakenly believed the men were armed. On Monday, the indictments against three officers in the Bell shooting were unsealed.
