Gina Gibney Dancers performed last year at Summer in the Square, above, the Union Square Partnership’s program of free Wednesday events in Union Sq. Some of this summer’s events include symphony, jazz, African drumming and hip-hop performances, Irish step, swing and flamenco dancing and yoga. The events begin June 29 and run through Aug. 17. This year’s season of free events, the eighth annual, will also include a sampling of performances from a half dozen of the area’s Off-Broadway theaters. “We’re trying to go for a diverse series,” said Christina Johnson, the Partnership’s deputy director, who organizes the event. “Not classical music every week.” Typically, there are up to four performances every Wednesday, at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Seating is on the center lawn, and many people choose to bring blankets to sit on and have a picnic. For more information, check the Partnership’s Web site at www.unionsquarenyc.org/, which should be updated soon with this summer’s schedule.
