This spring, nearly two years after a symbolic cornerstone was placed to mark the beginning of construction of the Freedom Tower at the World Trade Center site, actual construction of the building is expected to begin.
The building will be 1,776 feet tall and follows the idea of site plan architect Daniel Libeskind to have a height tied to our nation’s history. The building design is by architect David Childs.
The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 2004, but soon after the ceremony, the N.Y.P.D. raised security concerns about building a structure that will be a potential terrorist target so close to a major roadway, West St./Route 9A and Childs was forced to go back to the drawing board.
The tower will be the first to rise from the W.T.C. site. Developer Larry Silverstein owns the leasing rights to develop all five planned office towers for the site.
