The Greenwich Village Blazers, a Seniors softball team consisting of 13-to-16-year-old girls, is on a bit of a roll having won their third straight game (against two early-season losses). On Saturday they beat The West Side Millerettes in a lopsided victory, 21 to 7. Starting pitcher Laura Manos-Hey allowed only one run on four hits and two walks over the first four innings. Tricia Fratta came in to finish the game, and after a rocky fifth inning, held the Millerettes scoreless in her last two innings of work.
The hard-hitting Blazers who have averaged 17 runs per game during their current streak were led by shortstop Kate Phillips, who had a triple, double and single in her first three trips to the plate. When she came to bat in the fifth, her teammates pointed out to her that she needed a homerun to complete the rarely achieved “cycle.” Phillips bore down and ripped a monstrous line drive all the way to the center field fence, allowing her to round the bases with ease for the homerun needed to complete the cycle.
Mollie Schwartz, Sophie Spiegel, Mariama Bonetti, Brianne Hanley, Erica Silverstein, Alexa Nicholas, Mano-Hey and Fratta each enjoyed two or more hits. Speedsters Tory Brewster and Janelle Rosario continued to show improvement at the plate, each contributing to the Blazers relentless attack with key RBI’s. Meanwhile, defensively, Kelsey Lafer made a fine play at second on a blooping fly ball to snuff out a Millerette late inning threat.
The Blazers have a very talented team that is improving every week, according to manager Rob Silverstein. He believes the Blazers will be a force to reckon with in the upcoming playoffs.
The Greenwich Village Blazers play their home games on Saturdays at Chelsea Waterside Park at 10 a.m. They play a 10-game regular-season schedule against teams from other parts of Manhattan and the Bronx, followed by a single-elimination playoffs in late June.
