Chirlane McCray, New York City’s first lady, was among the featured speakers at the International Women’s Day rally in New York City on March 8.
“Today, you are marching in the footsteps of generations of feminists,” she told the crowd of thousands. She noted that in 1908, throngs of women marched through the city demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.
“We still have a long way to go before we get to equality,” she added.
McCray said her husband is a feminist, and she hailed his administration’s progress on key issues affecting women, in particular, universal pre-K and paid sick leave.
