BY ALBERT AMATEAU | Jerome Borgos, theatrical designer, artist and a longtime resident of the West Village Houses, died Mon., May 28, in Beth Israel Hospital, three weeks before his 86th birthday.
He had been housebound for the past year, said Katy Bordonaro, his friend and West Village Houses neighbor.
Born in Cleveland to Fred and Beatrice Borgos, Jerry Borgos served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II.
After the war he studied at the School of Art Institute of Chicago and then went to Yale Drama School where he earned a master of fine arts.
He worked as a theater designer in the 1950s and with a partner, Louis Schliemann, organized Schliemann-Borgos, which produced display backdrops for department stores across the nation. Their work was a benchmark for innovation and invention in the fashion world.
Schliemann, a great-grandnephew of Heinrich Schliemann, the 19th-century German entrepreneur and archeologist who excavated Troy, died about nine years ago.
After the business closed, Jerry Borgos acted in films in the 1990s.
A sister predeceased him.
