John Barrow, a longtime journalist and advertising writer who served in World War II as a radio broadcaster in Hawaii, died Oct. 1 at the Jewish Home and Hospital on W. 106th St. at the age of 85.
He had been ill with diabetes and died of respiratory failure, said his daughter, Barbara Barrow Miller, of Chelsea.
Born in Kansas, he went to Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., and entered the Army at the beginning of World War II, serving as a news broadcaster in Hawaii.
He married Elaine Quinn in 1947 when he worked for International News Service in Manhattan. He later wrote a column for the Journal American in Chicago and then wrote advertising copy for J. Walter Thompson in New York.
He and his wife lived in California for several years and moved back to Manhattan in 1997. She died in 1999. In addition to his daughter, two sons, John Barrow III, of Long Island, and Quinn Barrow, of Hermosa Beach, Cal., and six granddaughters survive.
Perazzo Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. A viewing was held at the funeral home at 199 Bleecker St. from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Wed. Oct. 4.
