Letters to the Editor

Giving Thanks

To the Editor:

I’d like to thank Downtown Express for recently printing my letter to the editor about my nephew being killed in the Twin Towers on 9/11 and my son-in-law serving in Iraq now and Afghanistan at the end of the year. I mention my son-in-law for a reason. My brother and I were walking down Mulberry Street at Columbus Park the other day when a car parked and a Marine in full dress uniform got out and ran into a Chinese dumpling store. Along came a meter maid and looked at the car. I told him that it belonged to a Marine. He looked at me and what I said to him went in one ear and out the other. He gave the Marine a parking ticket. If you talk to his superiors they will tell you that he was only doing his job. That’s a load of bull. There is a right way of doing his job and a wrong way. He did his job the wrong way. Our men and women in the military are getting hurt and being killed to protect us from terrorists and as a New Yorker I’d like to apologize to the Marine for the way he was treated by the City of New York. If Downtown Express prints this letter I hope that the Marine is able to read it and may God keep him safe.

Commending Love

To the Editor:

I’m writing to commend Bill Love for his thoughtful op-ed piece in the October 6 issue, titled “Let’s Move Forward With Park51.” I, too, hope the project will proceed as planned, because this fast-growing residential community very much needs public facilities like these. I also hope the proposed location will not be moved. American civil rights might not have advanced to set an example for the world if Rosa Parks had moved only a few feet in 1955. I hope our society still has the same courage and resolve 55 years later.
