The Brunel, a Spanish sail boat, readied for the start of the latest leg of the Volvo Ocean Race last Thursday near the Coast Guard’s majestic Eagle. The seven racing yachts that departed from Battery Park City’s North Cove Marina reached the half-way point of their 3000 nautical mile sail to Portsmouth, England on Wednesday. The race began back in November 2005 in Vigo, Spain, and has followed a course around the world that will end in Gothenburg, Sweden on June 19. The boats arrived in Lower Manhattan May 8, after a windy and difficult 318-nautical-mile sprint from Baltimore. They had a pit stop in North Cove, taking the day off before beginning the trip to Portsmouth, which is the seventh leg of what will be a nine-leg race. Dutch team ABN AMRO ONE leads the field, a full 90 miles ahead of the second-place Ericsson Racing Team. The only American boat, the Disney sponsored Pirates of The Caribbean, are in fourth, 163 miles back.
