EXHIBITIONS
MAGNUM PHOTOGRAPHER’S work on display at the Leica Gallery. Photographs spanning five decades by Elliott Erwitt, a member of the legendary Magnum agency. “Birth, life and death all have a place in Erwitt’s photographs.” He is the recipient of the Leica Lifetime Achievement Award. It will be presented to him at a ceremony and reception on Thurs., Nov 20, 6-8 p.m. at the Leica Gallery, 670 Broadway. 212-777-3051. The exhibit will run through Jan. 3. STREET SCENES FROM MAINE, ETC. Thomas Connolly, a Portland, Maine based artist, will exhibit his oil paintings at the George Billis Gallery. Connolly paints street scenes from Maine, as well as from his travels. The above painting is of a post office in Braidwood, Australia. AMERICAN JEWS IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR a new exhibit at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. The exhibit will run through Aug. 31, 2004. 36 Battery Place across from the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Battery Park City. Admission to the museum is $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. PAUL SHARPE CONTEMPORARY ART exhibits a new show, “Betrayal/Portrayal,” by four gay artists who express themselves through painting, works on paper, sculpture and conceptual installations. The premise of the show is “does one’s sexuality affect one’s art?” And, if so, “is there such a thing as gay art?” Pictured above is a piece by one of the artists, Aaron Krach. Other artists are: Robert Appleton, Alfredo Cannata and Robert Irwin. The gallery is located at 86 Walker St., 6th floor, one block below Canal, between Broadway and Lafayette. KRISTEN FREDERICKSON CONTEMPORARY ART IN TRIBECA exhibits a new show of British artist, Kate Teale, with an opening reception on Thurs., Nov. 13, 6 to 8 p.m. Teale specializes in double portraits of individuals as well as portraits of couples “whose relationships play themselves out across the surface of the paper.” Exhibit will run through Dec. 18. ITALIAN MOVIE POSTERS Posteritati Movie Posters presents a new exhibition of Italian posters. Included are Elia Kazan’s ‘On the Waterfront,’ and Hitchcock’s ‘Spellbound,’ (pictured above). There is an opening night cocktail party on Wed., Oct 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. Dave Kehr, a New York Times contributor who is publishing a new book on the posters, will attend. Gallery Viet nam Tribecan Michael Schenker traveled to Vietnam and South West China photographing “hill tribes.” This photograph of a young girl was taken near Vinh Long, Mekong Delta. Hill tribes earned their name over the centuries by fleeing to the hills during periods of war and oppression. Gradually they developed their own identity, including artwork, language, and music that has thrived in virtual isolation from the outside world. “PEACE” – ART ON THE PLAZA Zhang Huan’s Peace sculpture on display at the Ritz-Carlton in Battery Park City. The sculpture, which was cast directly from the artist’s body, tells Zhang Huan’s story and “gestures towards that of the immigrant and the artist at large.”
