Some of the 25 people profiled in the new “Lower East Side Oral Histories” recently gathered for a book party at the Duo Multicultural Arts Center, at 62 E. Fourth St. Above, from left, Nina Howes (who did the interviews for the book), James Galuppo, Nilda Rivera, Jan Lee, Joe Preston, Rebecca Lepkoff, Frankie Alexander and Markian Surmach, son of the late Myron Surmach, who was interviewed for the book. Others in the book include Jack Dowling, Carmen Pabon, Ernesto Rossi, Rabbi Harold Swiss and Steven “Pepe” Zwaryczuk. The oral histories were edited by Eric Ferrara, founder and director of the Lower East Side History Project. Howes is a nurse, political activist and writer whose plays have been presented Off Off Broadway.
