Lower East Side synagogue fire aftermath: Photos

Beth Hamedrash Hagodol synagogue was burned down on Sunday, May 14, 2017.

The landmarked building, built in 1850, was vacant at the time of the fire. It had been closed since 2007 because of low membership, according to Rabbi Mendel Greenbaum.

The Beth Hamedrash Hagodol congregation, which began using the synagogue in 1885, is the oldest Orthodox congregation of Russian Jews in the United Stations, the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy said.
