Man fatally struck crossing Canal St.

(Posted July 17, 2015 and updated July 20) A dump truck fatally hit an 83-year-old man while he was crossing Canal St. near the Manhattan Bridge on Fri., July 17, police say.

Police were called to the scene at around 1 p.m. in Chinatown and the man was taken to Lower Manhattan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police identified the man as Ka Chor Yau.

Police say the man was in the middle of the intersection when the truck, which was coming from the Manhattan Bridge, was traveling west and struck him.

The driver, a 24-year-old man, was taken into custody at the scene. Maykel Felix-Tejada was later arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, according to police.
