A man was shot and killed outside a Bowery St. club and another man was wounded early Wednesday morning, police said.

A 24-year-old black male with a gunshot wound to the head was pronounced dead on arrival just after 4 a.m. The second victim was shot in the ankle and was taken to Bellevue Hospital. He is in stable condition.

Police said the suspect or suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is ongoing and police did not release any description of the suspect.

Witnesses at the scene said the shooting began as a dispute over a spilled drink inside the Mission nightclub and continued out onto the street. Bystanders at the club at 217 Bowery St. near Rivington St. also said the wounded victim was a homeless man who had been sleeping on the sidewalk across the street.

Police were unable to confirm if this was true and club employees refused to comment.

Kelly Castagnero, a spokesperson for Prince, a supportive housing facility for the homeless across the street from the club said the shootings occurred in front of the facility but that no one from the complex had been involved.

“The man who was shot in the ankle went into the building and our security guard called an ambulance for help. But no one involved in the shooting itself was a resident of the Prince.”
