Wynton Marsalis, musician, composer and director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, will be one of seven distinguished people receiving honorary degrees and will deliver the response on behalf of the honorees at New York University’s 175th commencement to be held Thurs., May 10, in Washington Square Park.
The other honorees include Baltasar Garzon Real, an investigative judge on Spain’s highest court and former fellow at the N.Y.U. Center for Law and Security; Phillipe de Montebello, director and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and an alumnus of the N.Y.U. Institute of Fine Arts; Cathleen Synge Morawetz, professor emeritus and former director of the N.Y.U. Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and holder of the National Medal of Science; and Mamphela Aletta Ramphele, South African physician, anti-apartheid activist and former managing director of the World Bank.
Lester Pollack, founder of the financial firm Centre Partners Management, chairperson of the N.Y.U. School of Law board of trustees and a member of the university board of trustees, will receive the 2007 Albert Gallatin Medal for outstanding contributions to society.
Congressmember Charles Rangel, an N.Y.U. alumnus and dean of the New York congressional delegation, will receive the 2007 Lewis Rudin Award for Exemplary Service to New York City.
