The memorial to L.E.S Jewels, at Ninth St. and Avenue A at the entrance to Tompkins Square Park, drew a steady stream of mourners and onlookers on Sunday. But the memorial somehow got a bit chaotic and messed up at some point, according to Kaos, Jewels’s good friend, who was trying to put it back in order early Monday morning. Kaos put a boot on top of the fencepost and then a pint of vodka on top of the boot. This assemblage’s meaning, Kaos said, is that Jewels, who struggled with alcoholism, had “kicked the bucket.”
“He was my best friend,” Kaos said.
