A recent highpoint for The Villager came in December 2005 when it made New York magazine’s list of “123 Reasons To Love New York Right Now.” The New York Times also made the cut, but New York said The Villager topped the Times for the title of the “greatest newspaper in the world.” The magazine poked a little fun at The Villager’s intense coverage of heated community issues like moving the Washington Square Park fountain, saying it was the local equivalent of a major daily’s reporting on the Iraq War. But, in the end, New York lauded the newspaper for its articles on everything from dog runs to development scandals; as the magazine succinctly put it, “The Villager does a good job on its beat. It breaks news.”
