On June 25, Mayor Bloomberg announced the opening of all city pools. The city’s 53 outdoor pools are open to the public though Sept. 6, Labor Day. The announcement was made at a pool in Astoria, Queens, where the mayor and Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe were joined by Chris Jacobs and Christina Han, who both competed in swimming during the 1988 Olympics, for America and South Korea, respectively.
“The summer heat is upon us and it is the perfect time to open New York City’s pools,” Bloomberg said. “Our outdoor pools and beaches are excellent places for New Yorkers to cool off during the dog days of summer, and I encourage all New Yorkers use them often and use them safely.” Benepe stressed the continued presence of trained lifeguards, but reminded swimmers to “always use caution and only swim when a lifeguard is on duty.”
City pools are free, and are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. For pool locations call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov/parks, which also has a calendar of activities.
