  • The scene outside Happy Land Social Club, at 1959 Southern Blvd. in the Bronx, on March 25, 1990. Earlier that day, 87 people were trapped inside the club and died after an arsonist, Julio Gonzalez, set fire to the building as an act of revenge against an ex-girlfriend, police said.

  • During the riots on Aug. 20, 1991, a group of black teens attacked Yankel Rosenbaum, 29, stabbing him. Rosenbaum identified Lemrick Nelson, pictured above, as one of his assailants before he died of his injuries at Kings County Hospital. Police arrested Nelson, who was 16 at the time. Nelson was acquitted of the murder in 1992, but in 2003 was found guilty of violating Rosenbaum's civil rights and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The ’90s are in the not-so-distant past, but they were a historic time for New York City.

The decade saw unrest in Brooklyn as Crown Heights’ Jewish and black communities clashed in 1991 when two black children were hit by a station wagon — part of a motorcade for a Jewish rabbi. And tragedy struck in 1993 at the World Trade Center when a bombing claimed the lives of six people.

There were happier times, too, as the New York Yankees won three World Series and the Rangers took home the Stanley Cup.
