NYC weather: Temperatures rise after weeks of bitter cold

A winter warmup arrived in the city this week, with the temperature expected to reach 40 degrees on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Monday was the first time New Yorkers have seen the mercury rise to 30 degrees since Christmas Day two weeks ago.

The high temperatures are expected to stay above freezing for the remainder of the week, according to the NWS, with temperatures reaching up to 49 degrees on Thursday and 56 on Friday.

There’s also a chance of rain Thursday night into Friday, according to the weather agency.

The dangerously cold weather over the past weeks spurred New York Cares to extend its annual coat drive through Jan. 12. The group helps distribute coats to people who are homeless.

People can donate coats that are gently-used and freshly laundered to the Coat Drive Warehouse, 157 31st St. in Manhattan, Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
