Fatal accident Lourdes Fernandez, 68, was killed at 1:45 p.m. Wed., July 2 when she fell under the back wheel of a turning M22 bus on Madison St. near Jackson St., police said. The bus driver was unaware of the accident and drove on until police stopped him more than a mile away on Chambers St. near Greenwich St. He was not charged. The victim, who usually ventured out with the help of a home care attendant, went grocery shopping alone on July 2 when she lost her balance while crossing Madison St., according to news reports. She was declared dead at the scene.
Independence assault Police arrested two men for beating a man who was watching the July 4 fireworks with his 14-year-old son at Water and Broad Sts. at 9:30 p.m. Friday. Ahkeem Stafford, 23, of W. 124 St. in Manhattan, and Michael Simmons, 21, of the Bronx were charged with gang assault and accused of punching the victim, kicking him in the head after he fell to the pavement and inflicting face wounds, a chipped tooth and bruises to his shoulder. The victim’s son was not harmed. Bails were set at $2,500 cash or $5,000 bonds for each defendant pending court appearances on July 10, a spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney said.
Knifepoint holdup A fingerprint left on the front door of a Dunkin’ Donuts shop at 175 Varick St. in Hudson Sq. during an April 24 robbery led to the arrest last week of Tyheim Walker, 21, police said. Walker is charged with holding a kitchen knife to an employee of the shop near Charlton St. and walking out with an unspecified amount of cash. Police say they lifted a fingerprint on the door that matched Walker’s and arrested the suspect on July 4. He was being held pending a Supreme Court arraignment, according to a spokesperson for District Attorney Robert Morgenthau.
Tatum O’Neal pleads Tatum O’Neal, 44, the actress who won an Oscar when she was 10 years old, pleaded guilty on July 2 to a reduced charge in connection with her drug possession arrest on June 1 on Clinton St. near E. Broadway two blocks from her home. O’Neal was released on condition that she report to court on Sept. 4 to prove that she completed drug rehabilitation treatment. She must also pay $95 in court fees.
Assault plea Police say Jacob Frost, 27, of York, Penn. was leaning against the door of a cab parked at Hudson and Reade Sts. at 2:40 p.m. Mon., June 30 preventing the driver from entering. The suspect refused police officers orders to move, flailed his arms, shouted, “I hate cops,” when they arrested him and punched one officer in the eye, police said. He pleaded guilty to assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct on July 3, according to the office of District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. On July 17, he is expected to be sentenced to 60 days in jail.
