Fire injures three
A fire that swept through an apartment in a six-story building on E. 18th St. on Saturday morning Oct. 25 resulted in serious burns to four people, according to police and the Fire Department.
Isabelle Heine, 21, a New York University College of Arts and Sciences senior, sustained extensive burns and was admitted to the Cornell-Weill Center of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, along with Melissa Blach, 22, of Philadelphia, who was said to be in serious condition.
Jeffrey Edmondson, 23, identified by the Washington Sq. News, the N.Y.U., undergraduate newspaper, as a resident of the third-floor apartment who was dating Heine, and a guest in the apartment, Ryan McCaffery, 24, were taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
Brian Mahanna and Micah Lasher, both 21 and residents with Edmondson of the apartment at 340 E. 18th St., and a guest, Michelle Cruz, 23, were taken to the Weill center and treated for smoke inhalation.
Lasher, an up-and-coming political consultant, ran Brad Hoylman’s campaign for City Council for Lower Manhattan’s First District two years ago and most recently was campaign manager for Arlene Bluth in her bid for Civil Court judge on the Lower East Side.
The fire began shortly after 5:30 a.m. last Saturday, apparently caused by a short in the electrical wiring and spread to a second floor apartment in the six-story building. Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Church thieves
Burglars broke into St. Joseph’s Church, 5 Monroe St., on the Lower East Side some time on Saturday morning Oct. 25 and made off with $4,000 in cash and checks, police said. There were no arrests and police are investigating the case.
Body found
Police found the body of Yong Song, 55, a resident of 94 E. Broadway, on Market St. between Monroe and Cherry Sts. on the Lower East Side at 9:30 a.m. Sat. Oct. 25. The medical examiner’s office is investigating the cause of death.
