Guilty in Chelsea murder
A Manhattan Criminal Court jury found Rafael Colon, 65, guilty of first-degree murder on March 9 in connection with the April 2002 strangling death of a neighbor, Dolly Castaño, in the bathtub of her apartment at 419 W. 17th St. in the Robert Fulton Houses in Chelsea. Castaño, 79, a volunteer at the Fulton Senior Center, was known as the “Tea Lady” for serving tea and coffee to her fellow seniors at the Center. Colon, also a Fulton Houses resident, is scheduled to come before Judge Marcie L. Kahn on April 22 for sentencing. He faces a prison term of 25 years to life without parole.
Postal dereliction
Police arrested a U.S. Postal Service carrier near a dumpster on Friday afternoon March 12 outside the Fifth Precinct police station on Elizabeth St. after he was observed peeling the address labels off telephone books in order to drop them off in the lobby of a building instead of delivering each one individually. The Postal Service charged the carrier, Kenny Liu, 49, with official misconduct.

A man who walked into a HSBC bank branch on Broadway and 36th St. at about 3 p.m. Tues., March 9, passed a note to a teller demanding money, but fled when the teller refused, police said. The robber then went to a Sterling National branch at 37th St. and Seventh Ave. where he again passed a note and fled again when the teller refused. Police arrested the suspect, Paul Berger, 66, of Woodside, Queens, at Sixth Ave. and 37th St., and charged him with attempted robbery.
Lower East Side DOA
Police who were called to 87 Eldridge St. on Saturday morning March 13 found the body of Milton Resnick, 87, in his apartment, dead of a gunshot wound to the head. The Medical Examiner’s office and police are investigating to determine if the death was self-inflicted.
East River rescue
Harbor police responded to a report on Thursday afternoon, March 11, of someone in the water under the Brooklyn Bridge and rescued a 24-year-old man. The victim, identified only as Asian, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition for observation.
Find body in SRO
Police found a body identified only as a black man, 43, with no apparent sign of trauma, in Room 702 of a single-room-occupancy hotel at 39 W. 27th St. at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 9. The Medical Examiner’s office is investigating the cause of death.
