DuFresne murder
Ashley Evans, 18, the daughter of a former New York City Department of Corrections officer, was arrested Wed., Feb. 2, the third person charged with murder in the Jan. 27 shooting death of Nicole duFresne, 28, during a robbery on the Lower East Side.
Evans, who lives with her mother in Queens, was charged with taking part in the robbery at Clinton St. near Rivington St. and hiding the murder weapon that Rudy Fleming, 19, was charged with firing at duFresne and which he also used to pistol-whip her fiance, Jeffrey Sparks. According to police, Evans is Fleming’s girlfriend.
Evans’ father, Wayne Evans, handed the suspect over to New York City police at his home in Cheltenham, Md., where Ashley went after the fatal event. Fleming, who was on parole after serving part of a sentence for menacing school security guards with a gun when he was 16, was arrested for the duFresne murder on Jan. 30.
The following day, Tatiana McDonald, 14, was also charged with second-degree murder in connection with her role in the robbery.
DuFresne, an actress who worked at Rockwood, an Allen St. bar whose opening was on the night of the murder, Sparks and another couple had just left Max Fish, a Ludlow St. bar, when they were stopped by the band.
Earlier that night, the group had tried to rob the bouncer of a bar in the neighborhood, police said. David Simmon, 18, and a 15-year-old boy whose name was not disclosed, were charged with attempted robbery in connection with the earlier crime.
Chelsea murder arrest
Detectives with the 10th Precinct arrested two suspects on Sat., Feb. 5, for the Jan. 2 robbery and murder of William Gill, 31, in the lobby of his Elliot Chelsea Houses building at 418 W. 17th St.
Gill had been taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital after being hit on the head with a blunt instrument and died on Jan. 27. The Medical Examiner’s office ruled on Jan. 30 that the death was a homicide as a result of the head injury on Jan. 30.
Raul Romero, 24, and Kenny Webb, 29, both of 418 W. 17th St., were charged with second-degree murder and robbery.
Subway deaths
Judith Eng, 53, of 70 Bayard St., was struck and killed by a northbound No. 6 train at the E. 23rd St. station on Park Ave. S. at 10 a.m. on Wed., Feb 2, police said.
A man as yet unidentified was struck and killed by a northbound No. 6 train at the Canal St. station at 5:24 p.m. Mon., Feb. 7, police said.
Mercer St. death
The body of Adam Schwartz, 21, was found on the sidewalk in front of 300 Mercer St. at the corner of Waverly Pl. at 8:50 p.m. Mon., Feb. 7, police said. The victim, the son of Sam Schwartz, traffic consultant and former Department of Transportation official, apparently fell or jumped from the family apartment and no criminality was suspected, police said.
En garde!
An argument between an E. Ninth St. resident, 75, and a 30-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon Feb. 1 ended in violence at 1:38 p.m. when the older man pulled a sword from his cane and stabbed the younger adversary in the neck, police said. Eugene Carlson, of 628 E. Ninth St., was charged with first-degree assault on George Devol, who was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical but stable condition, according to police.
The argument started when Carlson asked Devol to move out of the way so he could pass in front of Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Church on the sidewalk, which was narrowed by snow and garbage bags, according to Newsday. Devol, described as homeless, had just come out of the church feeding program, according to the Daily News.
Nab bank suspect
A man who entered the Bank of America branch at 72 Second Ave. at E. Fourth St. at 1:40 p.m. Tues., Feb. 1, pretended to have a gun and passed a note to a teller, demanding money, police said. He fled with an undetermined amount of cash, but was spotted by a Ninth Precinct officer, James A. Mahoney, based on a description transmitted on the police radio. Mahoney arrested the suspect, Woody Davis, 24, of 357 W. 117th St., on Lafayette St. between E. Fourth St. and Astor Pl. Davis was charged with first-degree robbery
Christopher arrest
The Christopher St. Patrol, led by Terri Howell, a Village resident, and including four Guardian Angels members, apprehended a man charged with lifting a victim’s wallet with $2,600 in cash on Christopher St. at the West Side Highway at 11:40 p.m. Sat., Jan. 29, according to Detective Mike Singer, Sixth Precinct community affairs officer.
The victim shouted for help and the patrol, who were nearby, responded. The Guardian Angels, identified by their street names as Pluckster, River, Hector and Angel, held the suspect, Timothy Barth, 24, of no permanent address, until police arrived, Singer said. The wallet and the money were recovered. Singer said the precinct intends to award a certificate of appreciation to the patrol and its Guardian Angels members for their work.
Brawl on E. 29th St.
Four men were charged with assault, menacing and weapons possession in connection with a brawl on E. 29th St. near Fifth Ave. at 2:15 p.m., Wed., Feb 2, police said. Manuel Roldan, 33, and Ruben Lopez, 27, brandishing a knife and a box cutter, threatened Bassim Fardos, 25, and Hassan Abdali, 34, one of whom grabbed a metal bar and hit Roldan and Lopez, police said.
