Stabbing death
Robert Adams, 16, found staggering and bleeding at a phone both at the corner of Christie and Delancey Sts. at 7:33 p.m. Fri., April 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead five hours later of stab wounds, police said.
The victim, who lived with his foster parents at 68 E. Third St., sustained two stab wounds in the chest and one in the side. Police suspect someone he knew might have killed him in connection with $40 dollars he had borrowed.
Adams was unidentified until Sunday when his foster parents and sister identified his body at the morgue after hearing a report that a teenager in a Yankees T-shirt had been killed.
Speaking last Sunday afternoon, Mel Brown, a waiter at nearby Sammy’s Roumanian Steak House, said the area — which is dominated by restaurant supply, lighting and sign stores — has gotten better compared to the old days when hookers openly plied their trade and squeegee men swarmed around cars to wash their windows at stop lights for cash. But drug dealers still hang out in Sara Delano Roosevelt Park, he said.
Drug arrest
A group of unidentified men attacked and beat Andre Scott, 25, at about 4 a.m. Sat., April 30, at the corner of Madison and Clinton Sts. in front of the La Guardia Houses, according to police. Scott, taken to Bellevue Hospital with a broken cheekbone and cuts, was arrested by police, who said they found him in possession of drugs when they went to the hospital to question him. Police did not say what kind of drugs they found on Scott or specify the amount.
Arrest rapper
Police arrested the rapper known as Memphis Bleek and a friend early Thurs., April 28, and charged them with second-degree assault in connection with the beating of a busboy at the club NV on Hudson and Spring Sts. in Hudson Sq.
Bleek, 25, whose real name is Malik Cox, and his friend Talik Smith, 26, both of Brooklyn, were apprehended by First Precinct police as they were about to flee from the club in a waiting S.U.V.
The victim, Mahmud Uzzaman, 23, a student at York College in Queens who works nights at the club, told Daily News reporters that he was trying to get to the bar when Bleek and Smith pushed him and then started beating him. Uzzaman, with a tooth knocked out, ran out of the club, where he encountered police from the First Precinct who went in to investigate. Police said they apprehended the six-man rap posse on its way out of a side door. The victim identified Bleek and Smith as his attackers, police said.
Killed by bus
A pedestrian crossing E. Broadway at Pike St. at 7:30 a.m. Tues., May 3, was killed when a tour bus struck him, police said. The victim was identified only as an Asian man, 50, pending family notification. The tour bus was carrying no passengers at the time of the accident and the driver was given a summons for failing to yield to a pedestrian, police said.
Bad acid experience
Acid fumes emanating from the back of a garbage truck on Washington Pl. between Greene and Mercer Sts at about 10 a.m. Wed., April 27, sent the truck driver to the hospital for treatment, closed the street to traffic for about two hours and forced occupants of New York University buildings on the block to leave the area for a while.
The truck crew phoned supervisors as soon as they noticed the fumes, and environmental units determined they were of acid origin but were not able to say where or exactly when the material was picked up, according to the Washington Sq. News, the N.Y.U. undergraduate newspaper.
A fire official later said the material was possibly collected on the Washington Pl. block where the fumes were first noticed. Sanitation trucks collect only from residential buildings, including university-owned residences. Private carters serve university academic buildings and labs.
Hazmat workers hosed down the truck and by 1:50 p.m. the area was declared secure, occupants had returned to their buildings and the garbage truck resumed its normal route, according to reports.
