Hudson River rescue
A Fire Department rescue unit and First Precinct police pulled a man, 73, from the cold waters of the Hudson River near the Holland Tunnel ventilation tower at Canal St. at 10:45 a.m. on Mon. Nov. 20. The victim, who was found in pilings near the tower about 100 yards from shore after he had jumped into the river, was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he was treated for exposure. A rescue unit firefighter who went into the water during the rescue was also treated at St. Vincent’s for exposure.
False imprisonment
Olmado Hidalgo, who spent 14 years in prison for the 1990 murder of Marcus Peterson, a bouncer at the Palladium, a dance club on E. 14th St., filed a $50 million civil lawsuit in Federal Court last week claiming police and prosecutors with ignoring evidence that he was innocent.
The Palladium has since been demolished and the site is now a New York University dormitory.
Convicted with David Lemas, a co-defendant, in 1992, Hidalgo was freed last July by a judge who threw out the conviction. Hidalgo was retried on an unrelated weapons charge and deported to his native Dominican Republic.
Last year, another suspect told police that he and a friend — not Hidalgo and Lemas — shot the bouncer.
Close Avalon club
Avalon, the club at 47 W. 20th St., was closed Wednesday night Nov. 22, because its public assembly permit had expired, police said. The closing, which was temporary, came while crowds were waiting outside for the 10 p.m. opening of a party celebrating the release of a new album, “Kingdom Come,” by the hip-hop performer Jay-Z.
DOA on Ludlow St.
Police responding to a report of a man needing medical attention at 27 Ludlow St. at 6:20 p.m. Sun. Nov. 26 found Jai Rajkumar, 27, unconscious in the bathroom of apartment No. 2. He was declared dead by the Emergency Medical Service team and a suicide note was found, police said.
Fatal crash
Samuel Greenberg, the 2-year-old son of Daniel Greenberg and Tina Carr, residents of the Seward Park complex, was killed Tuesday afternoon Nov. 21 when his father lost control of the family station wagon in Harriman State Park. The car skidded across the road and was hit head on by an oncoming car. The child’s 1-year-old brother escaped injury but their parents were taken to Westchester Medical Center with head injuries.
F.D.R. collision
Three children escaped serious injury at 7:15 a.m. Fri. Nov. 24 in a two-car collision on the southbound lane of the F.D.R. Dr. at E. 14th St. Daquan and Shaquan Austin, 4-year-old twins, and their cousin Andre Lawson Jr., 6, were pulled from the wreckage of their grandmother’s car by passing motorists who stopped to make the rescue, according to a Daily News article. An emergency unit freed their grandmother Judith Lawson and her son Andre Lawson from the wreckage. Neither suffered serious injury, nor did the driver of the other car.
