Gunpoint robbery
Two men held up a victim at gunpoint in an elevator in the Baruch Houses on E. Houston St. and Baruch Pl. at 11:10 p.m. Mon., March 24, police said. The surveillance camera in the building lobby recorded an image of the two potential suspects.
Bags, wallets gone
A woman, 24, told police she noticed that her wallet was missing at 11:24 a.m. Tues., March 25, while she was at Petite Optique, 193 W. Fourth St., police said. She learned later that someone had made an unauthorized charge of $400 on her credit card at Macy’s in Jersey City.
A patron of The Monster bar, 80 Grove St., fell asleep in the place after two drinks and was awakened at 4 a.m. Sat., March 22, by a waiter who told him the place was closing, police said. He discovered when he stepped outside that his wallet was gone from his pants pocket.
A New York University student told police his bag was stolen while he was studying at Bobst Library on Washington Square South at 1:40 p.m. Tues., March 25.
A patron of Kettle of Fish, 59 Christopher St., was playing darts with friends at 11:30 p.m. Thurs., March 27, and discovered that his bag with a laptop computer, which he had put under a table, was missing when he went to retrieve it at 1:30 a.m.
A patron of Brass Monkey, 55 Little W. 12th St. in the Gansevoort Market, told police she discovered her wallet was stolen from her bag at about 10 p.m. Mon., March 17.
A patron of Jane Restaurant, 100 W. Houston St., told police she noticed her bag was missing at 10 p.m. Mon., March 24.
Arrest brawlers
Police arrested two men in the Smith Houses complex on Madison St. at 11:30 a.m. Wed., March 26. Rafaelito Nevaro, 28, was charged with second-degree assault for hitting Michael Martin, 25, with an unspecified weapon, and Martin was charged with second-degree assault for hitting Nevaro with a bayonet. Martin was also charged with possession of crack and weapon possession.
Village hold-up
Two unidentified men stopped a woman, 25, after she stepped out of a cab at 42 Bank St. at 2:42 a.m. Sun., March 30. One of the men pulled a silver handgun and demanded the victim’s bag. The suspects were described only as being black, between 25 and 30 years old. No one was injured.
Bones in basement
Workmen installing new water pipes in the basement of 277 Church St. in Tribeca found what looked like human skeletal remains on Monday afternoon March 31. They called police, who arrived at the four-story loft building near White St. at 2:20 p.m. The responding officers submitted the bones, including a skull, to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Ellen Borakove, M.E. spokesperson, said on Tues., April 1, that the bones belong to a black female. But the age and how long the person had been dead were still under investigation.
Beat van witness
The F.B.I. arrested Cao Yi Guo on Wed., March 26, and charged him with assaulting a federal witness in a case of extortion involving private van drivers who shuttle passengers between Chinatown in Manhattan and Eighth St. in Brooklyn.
Four defendants were convicted on May 2 last year for extorting money from drivers of the route that begins on the corner of E. Broadway and Market St. A witness who testified against them at the trial was driving his van on Feb. 9 of this year when Cao cut him off and threatened him, according to the charge. On March 18, the same victim was driving in Brooklyn when Cao pulled up in front, rammed the side of the victim’s car, pulled him from behind the wheel, kicked the victim, who was lying on the ground, and threatened to kill him, according to the charge.
