Police responded to Campos Plaza last Thursday evening, after a man was fatally shot over a $20 debt.
East Village homicide
An East Village man, David Bookin, 33, was killed at 7:20 p.m. Thurs., April 3, in the Campos Plaza courtyard at 613 E. 13th St. by a man who fired a shot that hit the victim in the head, police said. The shooting was over a $20 debt, according to a Daily News article.
Bookin, who worked as a dishwasher in a First Ave. restaurant, was seated on a bench when four assailants accosted him and one of them pulled a small-caliber pistol and fired the single lethal shot that lodged in his brain.
Quick car thief
A man who was unloading his car at 300 Mercer St. at the corner of Waverly Pl. at 1 p.m. Thurs., March 27, discovered the car was stolen when he went back for another armful, police said. The victim acknowledged that he left the keys in the ignition.
Driving impaired
Police arrested two suspects for drunk driving in the Gansevoort Market District around midnight Fri., March 28. One suspect was arrested at the southeast corner of Little W. 12th and Washington Sts., and the other was arrested at Hudson and Gansevoort Sts.
Studying fraud?
A resident of 219 W. 15th St. told police on Friday afternoon March 28 that someone used his personal information to sign him as a guarantor of a $73,249.28 federal Sallie Mae student loan.
Subway entrance fracas
Police charged two men — an aggressive panhandler and the man who hit the panhandler with a cane — with assault on Friday afternoon March 28 at the subway entrance on the southeast corner of Eighth Ave. and 14th St.
Jerrod Ford, 39, panhandled Gilbert Alvarez, 66, at about 2:30 p.m. and, upon being refused, punched and spat at Alvarez, who hit Ford in the face with a bamboo walking stick, police said.
Impersonation
A New York City Transit employee stopped a man who flashed an M.T.A. shield at the F train station at Delancey and Essex Sts. around 9 p.m. Wed., March 26. Fernando Diaz, 61, said he worked for the M.T.A. and should be allowed to pass through gate, but when the transit worker questioned him further, Diaz admitted he was not an M.T.A. employee, according to the office of Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. Diaz, a resident of 572 Grand St. in the East River Houses, was charged with criminal impersonation.
Subway fatal
Stan Pales, 21, of Brooklyn, died on Sunday morning April 6 when he was struck by an E train at the downtown platform of the I.N.D. station at 14th St. and Eighth Ave. Witnesses told police they saw the victim walking unsteadily on the platform before the accident.
