Cabs kill 2 women

Two women, both 26, were struck by taxi cabs and killed as they were crossing W. 14th St. at First Ave. together at 3:30 a.m. Sat., Oct. 4, police said. A westbound cab hit the two victims, Stephanie Dees, of Queens, and Ann Sullivan, of Albany. Dees was thrown into the opposite lane where an eastbound cab hit her, police said.

The two women were taken to Beth Israel Hospital where they died a short time later, police said.

Dees was from England but moved to New York in August, according to a Daily News article. The two friends had left a restaurant just before the accident.

The two cabs had the green light and the drivers remained at the scene and were not charged, police said.

Dead in stairwell

Responding to a report of a fight in a building on Catherine St. near East Broadway at 1:15 a.m. Fri., Oct. 3, police found the body of a man in the stairwell on the building’s 12th floor. The victim, identified later as Narcascio Vargas, 34, was shot once in the head and was taken to New York Downtown Hospital where he was declared dead. Vargas was a resident of the Alfred E. Smith Houses complex.

Bashed in bar

Police arrested a man as he fled from a bar at 74 Christopher St. near Seventh Ave. South, and charged him with assault for smashing another bar patron, 30, in the face with a beer glass. The man was being held in lieu of $3,500 bail pending an Oct. 9 court appearance.

Snatcher pleads

A man who snatched a $20 bill from one woman on Sunday afternoon Sept. 28 on W. 10th St. at Seventh Ave. South, and tried to grab another woman’s bag a short time later, pleaded guilty to larceny on Oct. 1 and was sentenced to six months in jail, said a spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney. The suspect, 28, was arrested at the scene, gave no name or address and was charged as a John Doe defendant.

Cop car break-in

Police arrested Douglas Bryant, 18, during the early hours of Wed., Sept. 24, and charged him with larceny and possession of stolen property in connection with the break-in of a car belonging to a Sixth Precinct police officer parked on Hudson St. at Charles St. while the officer was on duty. The break-in was discovered at 11:35 p.m. Tues., Sept. 23, and Bryant, a Jersey City resident, was arrested a short time later. He is being held pending an Oct. 22 court date.

Smoker gets burned

A patron of Ivo & Lulu restuarant, at 558 Broome St., stepped out for a cigarette around 1 a.m. Sun., Sept. 21, and came back to find that her bag, which she had left at her table, was gone. The victim, 24, lost her Massachusetts driver’s license, a digital camera and credit cards.

L.E.S. stabbings

Police responded to a call of a fight in a building on Stanton St. near Suffolk St. around noon on Sat., Oct. 4, and found Rafael Vega, 43, in the stairwell with a stab wound in the leg. The victim, who had asked a passing tenant in the building for a cigarette as he lay bleeding on the stairs, was taken to Bellevue Medical Center in stable condition. Vega reportedly had served time for selling drugs and weapon possession.

At 1 p.m. Sat., Oct.4, police responded to a call on E. Fourth St. about a man with stab wounds in his hands. The victim was taken to Bellevue in stable condition.

Bar hopping…oops

A woman told police on Fri., Sept. 19, that she had been bar hopping one night a month earlier on Prince St. and discovered when she went to pay a tab at the last place that her wallet and credit cards had been stolen. She later learned that a credit card of hers had been used for four cab rides. She reported the theft only after the credit card company told her to do it, police said.

Police found the body of Francis Laurita, 25, in his apartment on the 19th floor of 1 Irving Place, a.k.a. Zeckendorf Towers, at 15th St. at 11:18 p.m. Sun., Oct. 5. The medical examiner is investigating the cause of death.

Pricey bike thefts

A Pleasantville, N.Y., man parked his motorcycle on the southwest corner of Bleecker and W. 11th Sts. at 7:30 p.m. Mon., Sept. 22, and returned a half-hour later to find the 2004 blue Harley-Davidson, valued at $45,000, gone, police said. A Darien, Conn., man parked his motorcycle on the northeast corner of Waverly Place and Christopher St. at 7:30 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 4, and returned at 12:30 a.m. and found the bike, valued at $28,000, gone.
