Kidnap-rape attempt
Police arrested Cuerin Fernanders, 35, on Fri., May 21, and charged him with kidnapping, attempted rape, sexual abuse and grand larceny. Police said Fernanders picked up a 27-year-old woman who had passed out drunk on E. Ninth St. near Avenue C around 1:30 a.m. Fri., May 21, and brought her to his apartment at 616 E. Ninth St., between Avenues B and C. The victim fled after she regained consciousness in the apartment with her wedding and engagement rings missing and her underwear removed, according to the complaint filed by Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. Police arrested the suspect in his apartment.
According to the complaint, the suspect admitted to police that he saw the victim passed out on the sidewalk, took her to his apartment, kissed her on the mouth and breast and removed her underwear.
Rifle in school
School safety agents stopped a student, 16, who was loitering in the hall of Legacy High School for Integrated Studies, 24 W. 14th St., on Friday morning May 28 and found an unloaded, sawed-off, .22-caliber rifle with a silencer in his bag. The student, Shytik Bowman, was released in the custody of his parents, who posted the $1,500 bail.
West Village mugging
Police arrested two men and a woman on Thurs., May 27, and charged them with robbing a Queens man as he was walking on the northeast corner of Greenwich and Charles Sts. around 12:45 a.m. The suspects, with two unapprehended accomplices, followed the victim, put him in a chokehold, and took his cell phone and $211 from his pocket, police said. James Lucas, 18, Loquan Bruzzley, 17, and Shatiqua Hill, 19, were charged with robbery. Their two accomplices were identified only as black men both about 20.
Pub punch
A Village resident who was in Slane Public House, 102 MacDougal St., shortly before 1 a.m. Fri., May 28, told police he got into an argument with another patron who punched him in the face. The suspect, John Doe, 44, kicked one of the arresting officers several times in the right leg and injured him during the arrest in front of the bar. Doe was charged with first- and second-degree assault. The injured cop was treated at Bellevue Hospital.
Random attack
A Queens man who was going home from work was assaulted by a stranger on the southwest corner of Eighth Ave. and W. 14th St. at 2:20 a.m. Mon., May 24, police said. The victim told police that he could not describe anything about the suspect, who punched him in the face and threw him to the pavement.
East Village DOA
Police responded to a call at 10:26 a.m. Sun., May 30, to 325 E. Ninth St. to find a resident, Donald Wong, hanging and unconscious. An Emergency Medical Services team responded and the Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a suicide.
Bag stolen in Soho
A Brooklyn woman, 26, placed her handbag on a table in Café Duke, 545 Broadway between Spring and Prince Sts., around 2:30 p.m. Mon., May 24, where a man grabbed it and fled, police said. She lost $120 in cash, a cell phone and charger and credit cards, police said. The victim reported that $200 in unauthorized charges were made on her debit card. Police are checking a surveillance camera tape for an image of the suspect.
Sunglasses haul
Three thieves dressed in black, hooded and wearing gloves, broke the glass front door of the Solstice shop, at 107 Spring St. near Mercer St., around 5:20 a.m. Mon., May 24, and stole more than 100 pairs of sunglasses with a total value of $25,733, police said. A surveillance camera at the front door recorded the trio removing sunglasses from cases but did not record them entering or leaving the store, police said.
Flat-tire trick
A woman limousine driver pulled to the curb at Grand and Greene Sts. at 10:50 a.m. Fri., May 21, where a man told her she had a flat tire. When the victim, 48, got out to check the wheel, the suspect jumped in and drove off, police said. She saw her car stop a block away, where another man got in, police said. The thieves then headed to the Holland Tunnel and the car was last reported seen in Newark. The thieves were both described as black men in their 30s, one about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 140 pounds and the other about 6 feet and 200 pounds.
