Teenage extortion at Millennium High
Two Millennium High School teens were arrested on Thurs., Oct. 4 after they conned one of their high school classmates into giving them cash and his cell phone.
Mario Miranda, 17, and a 15-year-old whose name was not released allegedly told their 14-year-old classmate to meet them after school at a nearby pool hall, police said. When the victim met with Miranda and his cohort, the two older boys forced the 14-year-old to hand over $120 and his iPhone in exchange for “protection.”
The victim later recounted the incident to his parents, who reported the incident to police.
Miranda and his alleged accomplice have been charged with grand larceny by extortion and petit larceny. The New York Post reported that Miranda, who carries a past record of robbery, is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Golf club bashing
Cops arrested Joseph Jean Jr., 36, the night of Thurs. Oct. 4 after he smacked a man in the head with a golf club inside the Bowling Green McDonald’s.
The incident started when Jean got into a heated argument with the 28-year-old man inside the McDonald’s at 6 Water St., police said. The dispute eventually boiled over when the man punched Jean in the face.
Reportedly, Jean responded by grabbing a golf club (the police report doesn’t specify where he got it) and bashing the man in the back of the head, leaving him with a bruised lump on his skull. Jean was subsequently charged with assault.
Stolen motorcycle
A Yonkers man told police that his motorcycle was stolen from the corner of Peck Slip and South Street on the afternoon of Fri., Oct. 5.
The 40 year-old man said that he parked the 2008 Honda bike there around 2 p.m. and spent the afternoon hanging out in the South Street Seaport. When he returned to the spot several hours later, the motorcycle, valued at $6,000, was gone.
No suspects have been identified as yet, according to police.
Lock your doors!
A New Jersey delivery driver learned the hard way that you’ve got to lock your car doors — even when you’re only gone for a few minutes.
The man, 40, parked his van outside 47 Ann St. to make a delivery at around 10:30 a.m. on Wed., Oct. 3, and left the vehicle unattended while bringing packages inside. When he returned to the van, his cell phone, wallet, iPod and driver’s license were all missing, police said.
Surveillance video showed an unidentified perp — possibly black, according to the report — enter the van through the unlocked front door of the passenger’s seat and remove the items before fleeing by foot. Police said there was no damage to the vehicle.
L.E.S. murder suspect on the loose
Police are searching for 21-year-old Joshua Nunez, the prime suspect in the murder of Charles Ferndandez, 29, outside a Lower East Side barbershop on Sat., Oct. 6.
Nunez is believed to have shot Fernandez in the chest at around 9:30 p.m. following a fight inside Jose Beauty Salon and Barber Shop on Forsyth Street, between Delancey and Broome Streets, police said. Fernandez, who lived on Mott Street, took a cab to Bellevue Hospital after the shooting but died upon arriving.
The New York Post reported that police identified Nunez as the suspect on Tues., Oct. 9, and that he and Fernandez had known each other prior to the shooting.
Nunez has an extensive criminal record, including arrests for reckless endangerment, drug-impaired driving, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, according to the Post.
