Police blotter, week of May 28, 2015: Thief gets veteran on Memorial Day

Vet robbed on Memorial Day

Two men who work for the swanky David Burke Kitchen inside the James Hotel in Soho left their things in the male’s employee locker room — and got their IDs and credit cards ripped off, police say.

The employees left their stuff on Memorial Day at 8:30 a.m., but didn’t realize their belongings were missing until 5:30 p.m. One of the men, 36 and from New Jersey, had his cash, headphones, an expired military ID card and bank debit card stolen. He told police that there was several unauthorized charges on his card, but police did not specify how much or where they were made. The second employee, 21 and a Staten Island resident, had his New York driver’s license and debit card stolen.

Stand clear of closing doors

Subway rush hour on Friday — a woman plays a game on her $700 Samsung Galaxy smartphone to pass the time. A man snatches it out of her hand at Fulton St. station in the Financial District and runs out the train, police say.

The woman, a 32-year-old from West Harlem, boarded a northbound 3 train at Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn at 6:15 p.m. on Fri., May 22. When the doors opened at the Fulton St. station, the man — who she described as around 15, 5 ft. 10” and 150 pounds — grabbed the phone and fled. The woman gave chase but didn’t catch the man, police say.

Shoplifting weekend

Two shops in Soho were hit during Memorial Day weekend.

The first theft took place at 541 Broadway at the Lacoste store on Sun., May 24. A male employee, 26 and from Brooklyn, told police that someone came into the store at 2:45 p.m. and stole four pair of pants and six polo shirts — worth $1,048 — from the shelf, stuffed them in a plastic bag and fled. Police did not release a description of the suspect.

The second incident took place at True Religion at 513 Broadway on Mon., May 25 at 1:20 p.m., police say. This time, however, six thieves were working together, a female employee, 21, told police. The thieves — five of them male — came into the store and took two pair of denim shorts, valued at $356, and four pair of jeans, worth $992. They got away with $1,348 worth of clothing.

Locker break-in

After a cardio workout, a gym member got a different kind of raised heartbeat when he came back to the locker room and discovered his jeans — with his wallet containing his credit cards and identifications — were stolen from his locker.

The man, 42, was working out at a New York Sports Club at 217 Broadway in the Civic Center on Mon., May 25 at 1:40 p.m., police say. When he came back to his locker, the jeans were gone and the thief got away with $121 worth of stuff. The victim, an Upper East Sider, told police that he had locked his belongings. He cancelled his credit cards and there had been no unauthorized usage.
