Pickpocket socked her
A 59-year-old woman was standing in the vestibule leading to her workplace at 140 W. 10th St. when a stranger snuck up from behind at about 1 p.m. on Mon., Aug. 24, police said. She soon realized he was trying to take the Samsung Note 3 cellphone in her rear pants pocket. She resisted and got a punch to the head in return — leaving her with some bruising and swelling — and the mugger fled with the $350 phone. A 55-year-old man witnessed the incident, according to a police report.

Later that day, police arrested Khari Covington, 23, in connection with the incident, charging him with felony robbery.

Not-so-easy pickings
Police said a thief tried to take advantage of a drunk man sleeping near the southeast corner of Grove and W. Fourth Sts. on Fri., Aug. 28, around 2:30 a.m. A police officer saw the suspect allegedly rifle the pockets of the 45-year-old man’s pants, though he found nothing of value, according to a report.

Police arrested Arthur Ragin, 49, and charged him with attempted grand larceny, a felony. Meanwhile, the intoxicated man was taken to a hospital.

Taxi-hating trio
For unknown reasons, a man, 22, stomped on the hood of a taxicab on Sun., Aug. 30, around 4:20 a.m. He then repeatedly punched the windshield, resulting in damage of more than $250, police said. The 44-year-old hack exited the vehicle and confronted the younger man, who punched the cabbie in the face. Two associates of the attacker meanwhile looked on.

“Oh, this ain’t happening,” said Brielle Siler, 22, according to a police report. Police soon arrived but found the alleged attacker, Vincent Hopkins, along with Siler and Elijah Shabazz, 23, who cops said were uncooperative and resisted arrest.

Hopkins was charged with assault, Siler with resisting arrest and Shabazz with obstruction of government administration, all misdemeanors.

Gun search fires blanks
Two men allegedly followed up on a dispute from earlier in the week with some firepower early on Sun., Aug. 30. They arrived in front of 675 Hudson St. at 6:09 a.m. and, with one of them allegedly packing a black firearm, confronted a 36-year-old man, police said.

Officers found Anothony Sanders, 19, and Jonathan Sullivan, 25, nearby, but no gun was recovered, according to a report. The two men were charged with misdemeanor menacing.

Detective Diether
Veteran Village activist Doris Diether reported that she was informed by the manager of the HSBC bank branch at Washington Place and Sixth Ave. that it was hit by a robber last Wed., Aug. 26. The manager told her that two other banks in the area were also robbed that day, a Chase branch and another bank on the East Side. More details were not immediately available.
