Members of the New York congressional delegation announced Tuesday they have secured over $8 million for repairs to the Red Hook Recreation Center, which was damaged by superstorm Sandy.
U.S. Sens. Kirsten Gilibrand and Chuck Schumer, and Rep. Nydia Velázquez said the money, which will be administered through FEMA, will finally pay for much-needed repairs at the Bay Street facility, including work on electrical and mechanical infrastructure as well as renovations on its basement floors.
Velázquez said the money will also pay for flood-proofing the recreation center, which includes a pool, play fields, a multimedia center and a gym.
"Sadly, if climate change continues, we may well see additional superstorms in coming years, making it all the more important that we invest in storm resiliency," she said in a statement.
The Parks Department, which manages the facility, said it is in the process of creating a request for proposals to address the most signficiant needs of the facility.
