Residents at 90 West St., whose building directly faces the World Trade Center construction zone, are having trouble relaxing during the day and sleeping at night due to loud jackhammering at Ground Zero.
The constant noise stems from ongoing construction of the Vehicle Security Center, according to Glenn Guzi, government and community affairs manager at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, who is supervising the project.
Delays in the project, still scheduled for completion in 2013, has forced the P.A. to adopt an “aggressive schedule” involving longer shifts than originally anticipated, Guzi told Community Board 1 members at the W.T.C Redevelopment Committee’s July meeting. The P.A., he assured, is coordinating meetings with area residents and hotel managers to provide them with construction updates and other information.
“One thing I’m very comfortable with is the level of interaction we’ve had with property owners in the area,” said Guzi, acknowledging that noise-related complaints have been an ongoing issue as of late. “We’re cognizant of the impacts to the overall community, and we’ll continue to work with residents and community board members as need be.”
