Village architect honored by H.D.C.
The Historic Districts Council will make its fifth annual Grassroots Preservation Awards to seven organizations and individuals at 6 p.m. Thurs. May 13 in the garden and parish hall of St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery at E. 10th St. and Second Ave.
The awards go to citizens and organizations that advance the cause of historic preservation throughout the city. Leo Blackman, the Village architect who designed the new building for the Village Community School at 272 W. 10th St., will be among the honorees, along with State Senator Liz Kruger, who advocated for the recent expansion of the Murray Hill Historic District.
Andrew Dolkart, professor of historic preservation at Columbia University and frequent consultant on West Side preservation issues, was cited along with Nicholas Evans-Cato and Susan Tunick for their successful advocacy for landmarks designation of the Thomson Meter Co. building on the Brooklyn waterfront.
The Staten Island Advance will be honored with the “Friend From the Media” award for reporting on preservation issues in Staten Island.
