On Nov. 1, former President Jimmy Carter came to the Union Square Barnes and Noble bookstore on 17th Street to sign copies of his new book, “Our Endangered Values.” Several hundred people lined up on the fourth floor to have him sign their copy. Some people bought as many as a dozen copies for his signature. Carter did not address the crowd, and said little more than “hi” and “thank you” to each person. His appearance lasted two hours. Security was tight.
