Surrounded by family, friends and fans, Ruth Gruber, 100 — getting a kiss from daughter Celia Michaels-Evans, above — spoke at the opening of her exhibit “Photographs as Witness,” at Soho Photo Gallery, 15 White St. Fifty of Gruber’s archival images from 1944-’47 are on view. A legendary journalist and photographer, Gruber documented and advocated on behalf of Jewish refugees seeking asylum — including the infamous Exodus 1947 incident, when the British deported 4,500 Jews who had hoped to disembark in Palestine back to displaced-persons camps in Germany. Gruber is scheduled to be at the gallery Thurs., May 24, at 6:30 p.m. for a screening of her acclaimed biopic, “Ahead of Time,” and to sign her book, “Witness.”
