Nepalese people in the United States should be given “Temporary Protected Status,” Sen. Charles E. Schumer said Sunday.
The devastating Gorkha earthquake near Kathmandu on April 25 killed more than 7,000 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless. Protected status would allow Nepalese in the United States to remain here while their country recovers and prevent possible deportations, Schumer said.Temporary Protected Status was previously granted Haitians, Hondurans and Nicaraguans after natural disasters in those countries.
