At Community Board 1’s monthly full board meeting on March 22, Paul Goldstein of New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s office, having finished his monthly update to the board, said he had one more thing to add. Calling Mary Cooley of State Senator Daniel Squadron’s office to stand next to him, Goldstein said the Senate and Assembly had passed a resolution the previous week to honor Andy Jurinko, the husband of C.B. 1 member Pat Moore. Jurinko died on February 14 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 71.
“Obviously it was a tragedy to lose Andy,” said Goldstein. “He did great work in many fields. He was a great artist and sportsman but of course [we knew him] as a great community leader.”
Goldstein lauded Jurinko and Moore for their tenacity in returning to Lower Manhattan after the World Trade Center attack. Their home on Cedar Street was barely a block away.
“You showed the strength and the fortitude and the leadership to rebuild the community,” said Goldstein to Moore, “and we are very proud to have passed a resolution honoring you.”
Cooley explained that the resolution honoring Jurinko and Moore was an official part of the Senate and Assembly record.
Looking stoic but somber, Moore held the resolution close as she thanked Speaker Silver, Senator Squadron and the Community Board.
“Thank you for being there for me when Andrew was sick and now for being there for me when Andrew’s gone,” she said.
Julie Menin, chair of C.B. 1, replied, “We love you. You’ve been such a treasured member of this community and so has Andy.”
