Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver joined protesters at City Hall rally last Friday in support of the NEST+m School, which is opposing adding a charter school to its E. Houston St. building. He also responded to a question about the continuing stalemate at the World Trade Center site.
“The mayor wants residential housing,” Silver told reporters. “He’s teamed up with [New Jersey Gov. Jon] Corzine on residential use because the Port Authority wants more money and to sell the building rights on residential, brings them more money.
“They’re not concerned about down here, the businesses down here, the 67,000 workers who were displaced from this community, that the businesses are still suffering. It is four and a half years since September 11 and all we have is a hole in the ground because of their failure to focus on it.
“And I don’t know who [Mayor Bloomberg] thinks is a third party but Corzine just got there as governor. He’s been the mayor, the governor’s been the governor. The two of them couldn’t put something together ‘til now and the two of them don’t agree on the use here either. The last I heard, the governor wanted a commercial development down here.”
