Interior demolition and roof removal at a building on Sixth Ave. between Washington Pl. and W. Fourth St. resulted in a partial collapse of the building’s roof and part of its exterior wall at 10:30 a.m. last Thursday. There were construction workers inside, but they were reportedly on a lower floor and no one was injured. Firefighters responded to the scene to check the building’s structural integrity. The bank that adjoins the property was evacuated after the accident and remained closed for the day to be on the safe side, and opened for business the following day. David Gruber, a partner in the development team renovating the building, said a beam supporting the roof had given way. “We were doing some work on the other part of the building,” he said. “[The beam] had a little bit of stress on it.” The project will add several residential floors above the existing building, which is in the landmarked Greenwich Village Historic District. The Department of Buildings issued permits in December for the roof removal and interior demolition.
