The Summer Streets celebration kicks off this year on Sat., Aug. 1, inviting New Yorkers of all ages to play, run, walk and bike on car-free streets from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Summer Streets will open almost seven miles of Lafayette St. and Park Ave. to bikers and walkers, connecting the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park. Food and a number of free activities will be offered at each of the five rest stops along the route. Activities include a 270-foot water slide at Foley Square, yoga classes, children’s workshops and more.

Summer Streets will also run Sat., Aug. 8 and 15.

Rooftop Films and Arts Brookfield will also be co-presenting free movie screenings on the waterfront plaza at 200 Vesey St. this weekend. Live musical performances will precede each of the films in Battery Park City.

On Fri., July 31, Rooftop films will show a sneak preview of environmental film “Racing Extinction” which will debut worldwide on the Discovery Channel to 220 countries later this year.

Rooftop Films will be screening the 1984 Academy Award-winning Talking Heads documentary “Stop Making Sense” on Sat., Aug. 1 at the plaza near the Winter Garden. The film follows The Talking Heads during their three-day concert at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

The Seaport Film and Food festival also continues July 31 with a screening of the 2012 Saudi comedy film “Wadjda” at 7 p.m. at the Front/Row screen at the intersection of Fulton and Water Sts. Complimentary food samples and drinks highlighting Saudi Arabian culture will be provided.

Josephine Foster will be performing July 31 at 7 p.m. at the Fulton Stall Market at 207A Front St. Live music can be enjoyed every Friday at the Fulton Stall Market and beer and wine from local vendors can be purchased at the new Market Bar.

Brasil Summerfest, NYC’s premier Brazilian music and arts festival, is returning for its fifth year July 30 through Aug. 8.

Pier 17 in the South Street Seaport is hosting a free day of samba, a Brazilian-style dance, on Aug. 1 starting at 5 p.m. This festival will showcase some of Brazil’s most dynamic artists and will include live music throughout the day.

The sixth annual Lower Manhattan Community Day will take place on Governors Island. Aug. 1 Councilmember Margaret Chin leads the event on a free ferry ride at the Battery Maritime Building, 10 South St., at 10 a.m.

Grammy nominated wind quintet Imani Winds will be performing a free concert at Nolan Park on Governors Island Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be rescheduled to Sunday.

Battery Park City Parks Conservancy’s free Drawing in the Park program will be offered on Aug. 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Adults 18 and over of all experience levels are invited to join an instructor and create art in an outdoor environment.

Participants can use watercolors, pastels, charcoal and chalk to draw and all materials will be provided. This event is recurring every Saturday and takes place in South Cove near Battery Place and Second Place.

Hudson River Park’s Big City Fishing continues this summer every Sunday at Pier 25 in Tribeca from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. This free program is offered to adults and children five years or older who want to learn both how to fish and about the Hudson River environment. Rods, reels, bait and instruction are provided.
