The taxi e-hail lives on — for now.
A state Supreme Court’s Appellate Division yesterday OK’d the city’s yearlong e-hail pilot program, which lets New Yorkers hail yellow cabs using smartphone apps, after livery cab owners sued saying it would be unfair to them and that the program exceeded the Taxi and Limousine Commission’s authority.
"New York City has always been a taxi-hailing town, and we’re pleased to be able to offer passengers more than one way to accomplish that," TLC commissioner David Yassky said in a statement.
The pilot was originally approved last December, but livery cab owners and the city have been locked in a legal battle of appeals that has at times left the program in limbo.
But for now, those looking for a cab can whip out a smartphone and use any of a handful of apps to hail a yellow cab, including Hailo, Uber and Taxi Magic.
An attorney for the livery cabs didn’t respond to a request for comment.
